So from here on out, in every one of my blogs, I am going to dedicate a paragraph or more on introducing two items (a food/beverage product and a health/beauty product). For each item I will give all the ingredients and what they can do (or not do) for you. It will give you insight to something you have probably never thought about before. Don't you want to know what you put in your body? I know I sure do! You wouldn't take a pill that some stranger gives to you, would you? It's because you don't know what it is or what's in it.
I think a lot of us just go to the grocery store and will pick out packages of food that have nice pictures on them or will buy one bottle of shampoo over another because its packaged nicer. They make the food look good on the front of the package (or make the model for the shampoo advertisement prettier)...but you need to figure out what the heck it is and where it came from! Ok...here are my first two examples...
1. Alba Botanica Papaya Enzyme Facial Mask
-Purified Water
-Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice: Used to soothe and can reduce redness.
-Vegetable Glycerin: An emollient and emulsifying agent from vegetable oil. Helps product spread smoothly.
-Laminaria Digitata (kelp) Extract: Stimulating, Revitalizing, and Nourishing. Has tissue renewal, anti-inflammatory properties.
-Carica Papaya (papaya) and Papain: Is a gentle exfoliant that dissolves keratin.
-Bromelain: Enzyme similar to papain but found in pineapples.
-Cucurbita Pepo (pumkin) Seed: Puritive properties. For acne it has medicinal/antiseborrheic value.
-Zingiber Zerumbet (ginger): Softens and conditions the skin.
-Vanilla Plantifola: Mainly for a pleasant scent.
-Ahanas Sativus (pineapple): An anti-inflammatory. Includes amino acids, minerals, flavanoids, and enzymes.
-Panthenol (pro vitamin B5) moisturizer: For cellular proliferation and tissue repair. Also a humectant (which means it holds water).
-Polysorbate 20: A solubilizer, emulsifier, viscosity modifier, and stabilizer of essential oils in water.
-Xanthan Gum: For texture...stabilizes and thickens. Good carrier agent. Don't be surprised to see this in nearly everything.
-Benzyl Alcohol: Preservative against bacteria.
-Phenoxyethanol: Preservative with fungicidal, bactericidal, insecticidal, and germacidal properties.
-Ethylhexyl glycerin: Emollient and emulsifying agent.
-Chlorophyll: Soothing and healing properties.
2. Naked Juice Orange Mango Motion Drink
Ingredients:
-Orange Juice: Comes from nutrient dense fruit; Source of Vitamin C (great antioxidant that protects the body from oxidative stress...deficiency can cause scurvy), Potassium (helps with kidney function), Thiamine (aka: B1...it's in all cells...severe fatigue can occur if deficient), Phosphorus G (plays a role in all biological molecules, such as DNA and RNA), Folic Acid (aka...B9...assists in cell division and growth and helps produce red blood cells...cancer can develop if you lack this), and B6 (nesessary for enzymatic and metabolic functions).
-Mango Puree: Rich in phytochemicals (chemical compunds such as beta carotene occuring naturally) and nutrients; High in prebiotic dietary fiber, Vitamin A (very important for vision), Vitamin E (good for immune function and fighting free radicals), Polyphenols (aka...vitamin p...reduces cardiovascular disease and the risk for cancer), and 17 different amino acids.
-Apple Juice: Contains minerals and nutrients (has boron for bone health!), Polyphenols, and increases Acetylcholine in the brain (for increased memory).
-Banana Puree: Has Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, and Potassium. Helps reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and renal cell carcinoma.
-Guarana Extract: A natural stimulant that can give you a perk (should stay away if a doctor advises you to stay away from caffeine intake).
-Green Tea Extract: Source of Polyphenols, Caretenoids (prevents chronic illness), Tocopherols (Vitamin E), and Vitamin C.
-Natural Caffeine
-Ascorbic Acid: (a sugar acid...vitamin C is a form of ascorbic acid).
-Niacinamide: A water soluble B complex vitamin that can help prevent diabetes.
-D-Calcium Panthothenate: Helps metabolize nutrients and is critical for sex/stress hormones secretion in the adrenal glands.
-Cyanocobalamin: For of B12 (helps functioning of brain and nervous system).
-Pyridoxine Hydrochlorine- (aka...B6).
-Riboflavin (aka...B2...required for variety of cellular processes, energy, and metabolism). Note: B vitamins in general can increase metabolism, give you healthy skin and muscle tone, enhances immune function, and promotes cellular growth!!
I realize that looking at ingredients like this for every item you ever purchase can seem like an overwhelming task, but as you get familiar with them and what they are, you can skim the ingredients and know what you are looking for and what to stay away from. It really does get easier. So with that said...just begin taking your time at the grocery store to really understand what your doing for your body. It will really pay off!! Until next week...
God Bless,
~Michelle~
Loved this post! What would you say is the No. 1 ingredient to stay away from when choosing an exfolliant? (I can never make up my mind on a brand).
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you asked this question, Nikki. It is one that a lot of people have. There are so many ingredients out there that you need to stay away from (which is why I am doing the 2 products each week). Choosing an exfoliant is tricky because everyone needs something different (based on their skin type). A big "NO-NO" is an exfoliant with big particles. You don't want something on your face that will rub it raw from huge sand like particles. You want to find a product that has smaller crystal-like beads. If it looks like you are using a BODY scrub on your face...then you shouldn't be using it. It will scratch your face up. Even if you don't see actual scratches...they can really be ruining your delicate facial skin. All you are really looking for when you use an exfoliant is something to get some of the superficial dry, dead skin off. And while I do think having a good exfoliant scrub around the house can be a good thing...I would feel a lot more comfortable telling my clients to use a peel. You will get better results saving your money (that you would use buying an expensive scrub) and going to get a good chemical peel from a medi-spa or dermatologists office once every month or two. If you don't want to do that...here is a suggestion for a good scrub that will help you out (but not as much as a good chemical peel). I will be doing a longer post on chemical peels vs. scrubs.
ReplyDelete1. MaryKay TimeWise Microdermabrasion Kit (with step 1: refine, and step 2: replenish serum)
-This is a good product because step 1 really isn't too rough on your skin and then step 2: is a great serum that makes your skin super soft.
If you choose not to get this just keep in mind that you want something that is going to be gentle on your skin. And make sure to use a serum afterwards! Whatever you do...don't get your hopes up for having perfect skin with just a scrub. Like I said...save your money and get a good chemical peel (like the Obagi Blue Peel...that will totally take off the top layer of your skin and give way to beautiful skin without hyperpigmentation, etc.).
Hope this gives you a little information before I do the blog on peels, scrubs, and the alternatives. :)
I don't know if you plan on discussing this at some point, but would you be willing to cover good choices for shampoos, conditioners, and styling products for people with naturally curly hair? Also, what are your suggestions for combatting the harsh chemicals used to treat city water? It's killing my hair, and it's usual curl has gone flat.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. :) I have curly hair as well...and had struggled for such a long time to somehow make it look normal! It always seemed to look frizzy, dried out, and lifeless. Here are a few tips for curly hair:
ReplyDelete1) Avoid shampoos/conditioners/styling products that have "alcohol" in any of the ingredients. They will dry your hair out more...and curly hair requires extra moisture.
2) Avoid shampoos/conditioners/styling products that claim to be volumizing...they can separate/loosen curls and encourage frizz.
3) Use products that have ingredients such as Vitamin E, glycerin, silicone, silk amino acids, resins and gums, calcium, or magnesium...all of which can help smooth, lift, and define curls.
4) Try and not wash your hair everyday because it can remove natural oils that your hair can use...(remember, it needs that extra moisture)...
5) Don't use products that are too heavy...they will just weigh your hair down and make it feel greasy...
Some good products for frizz/curly hair:
-Rene Furterer Myrrhea Anti-Frizz Silkening Shampoo- $23.00 (but so worth it!)
-Nexxus Hydra Sleek Conditioner- $15
For repairing damage (whether it came from chemicals, sun damage, coloring, or exposure to heat)...here are a few great products to help...
-Molton Brown Reawakening Mer-Rouge Hair Hydramasque- $30
(I use this product and absolutely LOOOOOVE it!!!!)
-Joico K-PAK Split End Mender- $15
Both of these products will help repair the damage and protect it from any further damage.
Let me know if this helps and feel free to ask any other questions you might have!
Michelle, im so glad you put the Alba enzyme mask on here, because i recomend that to alot of my clients that can't aford the salon products. I also use it every week.
ReplyDeleteAlso i know you love finding new products, and someone posted on here about curly hair. you know i have really curly hair and i finally found a product with great ingredients. Have you tried the Quidad products for curly hair ??? i LOVE LOVE LOVE them
anyway love the blogs, keep it up
Jenna Galvez
Thanks Jenna! :) I actually have used some of the Quidad products...surprise, surprise. I liked them a lot, but I keep going back to the shampoo and conditioner I mentioned in the reply to Becca (see above). But...one product I absolutely LOVE from Quidad is the Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel. It has been recommended by many beauty magazines including Allure and has won awards too! It has ingredients like wheat protein and amino acids (both of which are good for all hair types...but definitely curly hair). Through quidad.com it is $22, but you can usually find it for cheaper through other websites. :) Thanks for mentioning this company!
